Fishing Report - Week Ending 23 July 2011

Sardines were again netted this morning in the Mtwalume area and reports of huge shoals off the Transkei coast were also received.

Fishing in general along our coast has become rather patchy with the only "hot" spot being the Port Edward area where good catches of decent sized Shad are being made daily. Anglers utilising live-baits have had there share of success in this area with some good sized Garrick and Kob being landed. An unknown angler was reported to have landed a 18kg Yellowfin Tuna off Splash Rock on a live Shad. This is an awesome catch from the side.

Reports from the Transkei are that the shad are plentiful and of good size at most of the renown areas. Port st Johns is at the moment experiencing an awesome run of good sized kob being taken mostly on Rapala's. Garrick also seem to be in abundance in this area.

The Sandspits at Port Shepstone is also starting to live up to its reputation with some amazing catches of Kob being made, especially with Rapala's, at night. The more fancied colours being Goldfish and Perch. The best times to target this species on Rapala would be two hours before the low tide and then three ours of the pushing tide.

On the offshore side some great catches of Tuna have been made.

I was fortunate to have taken a group out last Tuesday and ended up with 15 fish, 8 between 18kg and 25kg and seven fish in the 15kg class. I cannot tell you how many fish were lost to sharks as they are still a major problem out there.

Some quality bottom fish have also been coming out.

With good weather forecasted up until Monday, Woza Weekend.

Will let you guys know next week what happpened.

Cheers

Mark
