We are blessed at Shelly Beach to have a Reef such as Protea Banks only 7 Km's off shore. This reef hosts a huge variety of species with your summer Gamefish species such as Marlin, Sailfish, Barracuda, Wahoo, Tuna and Bonito, Species such as Kingfish, Amberjack, Tropical Yellowtail and Yellowtail are now being encounted more frequently with the introduction of Vertical Jigging. The only problem with fishing on Protea Reef is the ever increasing population of Sharks. A large proportion of hooked fish is lost to these predators.

Rock and Surf angling along the South Coast (Hibiscus Coast) can be basically broken down into two seasons, namley your summer and winter. During the summer Non-edible species such as Sharks, Rays and Sandsharks can be targeted from your deep water points and sandy beaches.During the Winter months we are blessed with the annual migration of sardines along our shoreline together with all the predatory fish that follow the feast. Edibles such as Shad, Garrick, Kob, Kingfish and Couta are some of the excellent fighting gamefish one can target. Obviously these shoals are also followed by massive sharks and some excellent sport fishing can be had, testing oneself and tackle against these monsters.
